64 bit applications

Saturday, March 7th, 2009
I’ve been busy building a new hardware setup and I got to the stage where I’m happy where everything works on hardware side. So I installed Vista 64 bit last night and that went well. Then I started to search to find as many 64 bit applications as I can for my needs to ensure my machine runs most of the 64 bit applications.

And you know what? Not much! I’m pretty disappointed about that considering 64 bit has been out for so long. Some website says “yes, it will run 64 bit” but it only installed as 32 bit. Yes, it runs fine but is not taking advantage of 64 bit. One example is the AVG Virus Scanner. They say they’re 64 bit but when you run the setup, it installs to the 32 bit program files and runs as 32 bit. (as far as I can see)

Another example is I want to use 64 bit Internet Explorer - I tried to download & install Adobe Flash Player - but no, they only support 32 bit web browser!

Message to Software Developers - stop being lazy and develop 64 bit application now. This is the future.

Questions for you 64 bit users - what software do you use that use the FULL 64 bit. Nothing of the 32 bit crap. I want to know what you got - freeware or paid for. Virus scanner, media player, etc etc.

The Good Thing about having a Day Off

Friday, March 6th, 2009

The Good Thing about having a Day Off:

* You get to stay at home and not have to do any work related
* You can get lots of stuff done that you have been putting off for a while
* You can relax
* You can watch as many TV show as you like
* You can chat to friends over Ims

The only bad thing that happened today for me was having to do the house work, hoovering, washing up clothes and dishes. But at least the house is clean now. :D

02920368797 and Communications Direct

Friday, March 6th, 2009

For the past few days, my mobile phone has been ringing from the number 02920368797 and it’s starting to get VERY annoying as I can not pick it up and talk. It would be about 3 or 4 times a day. Every ring, I press the Ignore button.

Yesterday, they did it again and I decided enough’s enough and called them using the number above via Typetalk and ask what is going on.

It turned out they are a company called Communications Direct and are focused on selling mobie phone contracts/upgrades. But nothing to do with T-Mobile as that’s who I am currently with. And I remembered that I’d already asked them to remove my number from them. So why the calls again?

Here’s the edited version of my phone call to them:

>> is Me
< < is Communications Direct

>>Hi… can I ask where you got my phone number from? T-Mobile told me they never sell customer data, so how come you keep ringing me 4 times so far today?

< < We can delete your number from our system but i do need the mobile number. i do apologise for any inconvenience caused

>> Ok, but where did you get it from?

< < We have our own data base of numbers that we built up over the last 5 years that are freely available from ofcom

1st bullshit story - OFCOM do NOT give away phone numbers to anyone who asked for it. So I decided to push for more details but they kept going around my question and keeps asking for my mobile number. I didn't trust that and wanted to put that in writing so I asked for their address. They didn't give me and keeps asking for my number. I had to ask 4 tiems before theys aid they need to speak to their manager.

A few moment later, they said they will need to pass me to the customer service. So I got passed around and got to someone who was very happy to tell me more about how they work:

>> Can I ask where you got my number from?

< < Yes bear with me .. what happens we work on a national data base some of the mobile numbers that you have is pre fixed numbers and the rest of the number like the last 5 numbers of the mobile number are randomly selected from the data base..that where we get our numbers from.

>> So in other words, you just generated any random numbers and called away?

<< Yeah basically it’s a large data base that we work by … There’s 11 numbers in an mobile number and the last 5 digits are randomly selected we dont hold any personal information just a mobile number…

There you go. They do not care if the people opt-in or opt-out because you don’t have any choice, they just randomly generated the numbers and called each of them. Wonder if OFCOM is interested to know what they are doing?

Oh and I finally did get their address after 6th times of asking. And I’m going to share it with you so you don’t have to go through the hassle like I did. This is where you can write and ask them to remove your number from their so-called “database”

Has anyone gone through the same experience as me? I’d like to hear your story so I can build up some information about them.

Hello world. Tony has awaken…

Friday, March 6th, 2009
*taps on keyboard*

Hello? Hello, testing - is this thing on?

Oh hello readers! Pardon me for the test. Was checking to see if this is ‘live’ ;-P

First of all, massive apologies once again for the readers of this blog for lack of postings and many thanks for your e-mails of concerns and checking to see if I’m still plugged to the interweb.

I’m good. We are great. Things has happened a lot for the past year. Work is progressing well with lots of changes in preparation for the Campus redevelopment in the future.

House DIY has slowed down due to lack of funding so there are some unfinished jobs dotted around the house. We still have not sorted out the bathroom so we left it alone. So just trying to keep it clean till we have the time & funds to do the job. But we did get the outside roof of the porch area sorted as the timber was all rotten and damp and was in the risk of snapping in half. Now it’s all new and stronger, ready for many years of use.

We still want a new fence around the house as it’s starting to fall apart due to old age of the wood & plastic fence. And the rear garden’s wall is falling apart too. We got some quotes for the job bit it’s costly, so we’re considering doing it ourselves, maybe with mates who know their stuff. Perhaps this Summer, but who knows? *shrugs*

Went on holiday & city breaks last year and we enjoyed it. In no particular order and in various months - Dublin with hire car, Kent, Bristol, Calais + Brugge via Euro Tunnel, Venice + Pisa + Firenze with hire car - we enjoyed it. And whilst in Italy, as some of you may know, I popped the question to my girlfriend and she said yes. :D

The driving in France was not bad, but for Italy, that was crazy! Italian drivers has very bad/poor driving manners! Both in both cases, the motorway were much better than what we have in UK!

For this year, we’re planning to do a UK road trip, well sort of… we’ll taking turns with the driving where we will drive from Norwich -> York -> Newcastle -> Edinburgh -> Loch Ness -> maybe Leeds or Hull -> Lincoln -> Norwich - all in one week of driving fun and visiting places of each area that we visit. Should be fun. :D

Now… petrolhead post alert. :D We still have the same car - Ford Focus ST170 and VW Golf 1.4. Our VW Golf failed MOT last week due to a hole in the exhaust which has failed the emission test. But after putting a new rear exhaust box, all passed with no issue. My ST170 passed with no issue which is good considering it has now passed the 100,000 miles mark. Just need to give it a servicing and that would be good for another year.

But of course, being a petrolhead, I am always on the look out for the next car. I love the look of the new Ford Focus RS but too expensive to buy. :D So obviously I’ll be looking for second hand car, but at the same time, the car prices has been dropping like dead flies. Therefore it might be easier to keep whatever cars we have until it’s time to replace it if really needed.

Anyone tried Windows 7 yet? I have and it’s pretty good. Much better than Vista in the terms of features and speed. Vista ran crap on my netbook (MSI Wind) but with Windows 7, it ran so smooth and fast, even with Aero turned on! I’m very impressed and am looking forward to the RC build to give it further testing.

Today, I am enjoying my day off, hence writing this blog, and knowing myself, I got loads more to post later on so I will end this now as it’s getting a bit long now. :D

I hope you all have been well and please do let me know what has been happening with your life and let me know any ‘gossips’ :D

Take care, readers.
