Well, well what an interesting night! Let break it down in time order
4:30pm - 5pm
Finished work, got home. Went to post office to post some memory to the winner bidder. Then headed to the petrol station to fill up my car. Then headed back home.
5:10pm - 5:30pm
Got a txt msg from the missus - car broke down, won’t start at all. The car started to stop after she got out of the roundabout on the dual carrageway, dangerous place to stop! However she managed to find a safe place to park, away from the road. It was near Swaffham. (arrow marks where her car broke down) About 40 miles away. She was in King Lynn for training to staff and was driving on the way back home. Dark. Alone. Cold. Frost. Ice. And she asked me to go and meet her there.
Checked map, find best route, etc. I took a bottle of drink & some warm scarfs and headed my way to Swaffham.
5:45pm - 6pm
TRAFFIC! Dammit, rush hour was not over, still in Norwich area but on the outside edge of Norwich.
6:50pm
Finally arrived there. She said I am a hero. I checked under bonnet. Checked cambelt. Looks fine. Tried to turn the engine over. Nothing at all. Checked lights. It’s flickering and dimming, which shows the sign of flat battery. But it could be the starter motor not sending out charge to keep the battery full.
7pm
Went in my car, turned on heating to warm her up. She called RAC, gave them my membership number, where we were, etc etc and was told they don’t know when they will turn up. So we waited. And waited…….. so long the ice started to build up on the window and VERY foggy. We was soooo cold, we left the heater on with the hazard lights flashing. And waited
9:10pm - 9:45pm
Finally someone turned up. He looked through the engine and basically said the same thing as what I suspected - it was the starter motor not sending any charge to the battery. The battery is fine.
As my RAC membership card is ‘Roadside’ which included free tow to home but only up to 10 miles. We was miles away to Norwich and he wanted £55.82. But he suggested a good garage in Swaffham, where he can tow the car there for free. So we took that offer and left the car in the garage. The RAC dude wrote his report and posted it in ther garage along with the car key so they will fix it tomorrow. That means we have to drive back to Swaffham tomorrow to pay & pick up car. I txted one of my workmate and asked for tomorrow off - he said OK. So that’s sorted. We headed back home.
10:40pm
Finally got home, feeling all worn out and mega hungry as we didn’t have any dinner. The drive back home was bad as lots of area was very foggy. But we got home OK.
Going to eat and then need our well deserved rest!
